An altar does not serve only as a place, a box or a shelf where you put objects used within
rituals. Perceive it rather as a center of energy, reflecting your inner
processes, personal intentions and connection with the universe. It is about you yourself – a very intimate
environment, where you concentrate your manifestation and your desires.
A personal altar is an environment that invites you into meditation, peace and focus. It is
meant to be a part of you, where your mind rests and your spirituality develops. Setting up your own
sacred altar is not a difficult task and you can manage it alone, or with the help of close
ones. Creating your own altar is a great leisure activity, because you make it so that it fits your needs,
energy and taste.
What You Will Need to Create Your Altar
- Base of the altar
For making the altar we need at the start a small table, shelf or
box. Choose any surface that will serve as the base of your altar for rituals. It can
be an old table, a smaller shelf or a wooden box. If you do not have space for a permanent altar, it can
also be portable – for example on a tray or in a small box. A portable altar is ideal when you wish to
practice white magic or meditation anywhere you feel at peace.
- Cloth for covering
Choose a cloth that fits your taste or your home. At this moment
you can adapt the altar by the color of the cloth also to your intention. For example, a white cloth
will represent a cleansing altar and universality. Black can at the altar mean release, protection,
change of thinking or leaving the past.
Silver and blue colors of cloth are suitable when we want to
connect with the moon energy in its highest vibration. The universal colors for a
spiritual altar are white, silver and blue. The cloth can be simple, without patterns,
or decorated with symbols that inspire you.
- Symbols of elements
The altar should represent the four basic elements: fire,
water, air and earth. Each element you can simply represent with the help of related objects, which will
be part of the manifestation altar.
- Fire: Candle (choose the color of the candle according to your intention).
- Water: Chalice, bowl with water or small bottle filled with water from a
natural spring.
- Air: Incense sticks, feather, bell or breeze of a fan.
- Earth: Crystals, salt, small plants, herbs or stones that you find in nature.
The altar should always contain all elements. You want the elements to be interconnected and to
cooperate on fulfilling your higher intention.
- Personal objects
Also objects that are close to you should be part of your own
altar. As I already mentioned, the altar is your personal space, your sanctuary. A place
that is highly connected with your intimacy. By placing personal things into the altar, you show the
universe that this place is connected with you, that its energy works in your favor.
Choose close
objects, for example a photograph of your loved ones. Put into the altar symbols of your family and of
yourself, which have for you a special personal meaning. Part of the altar can also be talismans,
amulets or books that spiritually inspire you and are in harmony with your soul. You can also put into
the altar objects that you change with your ritual intentions – for example, crystals
for love and health, herbs for cleansing, or a key as symbol of new paths.
- Lunar symbol
Connect the altar by allowing it to better absorb lunar
energy. You can put into it for example a moonstone, which strengthens the connection of
the altar and thus also of yourself with the moon. This step is optional, but moonstone
is often a part of white magic altars, supporting intuition and emotional clarity.
Consecration of the Altar
When you have your altar prepared so that it fits your ideas and spiritual plans, it is time
to consecrate it to its purpose. Consecration proceeds in simple steps and it is an important rite for
connecting the altar to the right energies. Follow the following steps:
- Choose a suitable place
Find a safe place – for example a calm corner of your room,
where the altar will be able to function in its own rhythm, peace and quiet. If possible, choose a place
with access to daylight or moonlight, but it is not a condition, especially if you have
a portable altar.
- Place the cloth
Put the chosen cloth on the surface of the altar so that it covers
it completely. The cloth serves as the base layer of your sacred altar and creates a
clean and organized environment.
- Placement of elements
Put the candle in a place where it will burn safely and
represent fire. Make sure nothing blocks it from releasing the energy of fire and that
you are safe. A bowl with water or chalice can be placed on the opposite side of the altar to balance
the fire energy. The air element (feather, incense stick, bell) place where it is easily accessible.
Objects connected with earth (crystals, salt, herbs) distribute evenly, so that they create stable and
grounded energy across the whole base of the altar.
- Moonstone
If you have acquired it, place the moonstone in the middle of the altar,
so that it becomes its central point. If not, in the center you can also place this book or another
spiritual item connected with white magic rituals, the moon and good intentions that
your rites spread.
- Personal objects
Put on the altar objects that have for you a special meaning and
vibration. These items connect your altar with your own manifestation energy.
- Cleanliness and maintenance
Regularly clean and purify the altar. Remove dust,
change the water in the chalice and renew candles or herbs. As you care for your body, so care also for
the body of your altar. Before every ritual, make sure that your sacred space is ready
for work and does not contain unnecessary objects or impurities.
Altar as a Reflection of Your Energy
Your altar is not only a table – it is a living reflection of your energy and intention. As your inner world
changes, allow your spiritual altar to transform with it. It mirrors your emotions, your
balance and your manifestation power. Whether you use it for white magic, meditation,
or daily rituals, it remains your safe space to reconnect with yourself and the universe.
Treat your altar with love, gratitude and awareness. The more positive energy you offer, the more blessings
you receive in return. It is your sacred mirror, your inner temple, your silent companion on the path of
creation and peace.
